Stories 17 and 18
Story 17:
The ship came. Then it left.
Story 18 (The Veteran's Confession):
I started the war. I won't say which side I was on--Union, Confederate; it doesn't matter. I was in love at the time, with someone, and had gotten no sleep the night before. Maybe that was why I pulled the trigger and fired that first shot. Or maybe I was just plain terrified.

"It's a bird!"
"It's a plane!"

"Poor bird!"

They were alone together, accidentally stranded on a tropical desert island. They had brought nothing with them, and there was no chance of their being rescued or discovered any time soon. They loved it.
